Closing Arguments Commence in Trial of Freedom Convoy Organizers

The lengthy criminal trial of Freedom Convoy organizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber is nearing its conclusion as attorneys gear up to present their final arguments this week.

Lich and Barber, along with other organizers, mobilized a large number of protesters and commercial trucks to Ottawa in 2022 to oppose pandemic-related public health restrictions and vaccine mandates.

Their criminal trial commenced in September 2023 and has been marred by delays that have stretched the proceedings over almost a year.

Both Lich and Barber are facing charges of mischief, intimidation, and several counts related to inciting others to break the law.

Furthermore, Barber is also accused of inciting others to disregard a court order.

In their closing arguments, the prosecution aims to demonstrate that the two collaborated closely to orchestrate an unlawful protest, and that evidence against one should apply to both.

Throughout the trial, Lich and Barber’s legal representatives have maintained that organizing a protest is not illegal and is safeguarded by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
