Demand for Stricter E-Bike Regulations Grows in Response to Fires
The friends and family of a 21-year-old woman who tragically died in a fire caused by an igniting e-bike battery are urging the government to take action.
Campaigners, including the family of the young woman who lost her life in an e-bike fire last year, are calling on the government to address the issue of poor quality batteries, chargers, and e-bike conversion kits, which pose a significant fire risk.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is supporting this call to action, with Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Field stating that e-bike and e-scooter fires are becoming a growing concern in London. According to Field, there have been 43 fires related to e-bikes in London alone this year, a significant increase from the previous year.
Field emphasized the dangerous nature of these fires, highlighting the rapid development and fierceness with which they spread when batteries and chargers fail. The LFB has also shared a video showcasing the rapid ignition and intense burning of an e-bike at a London railway station.
Tragically, Sofia Duarte, a 21-year-old barmaid, lost her life in an e-bike fire on New Year’s Day. The incident occurred after an e-bike being charged in the communal hallway of a flat caught fire, filling the area with thick, acrid smoke. Sofia’s boyfriend managed to escape, but Sofia succumbed to the smoke.
Supporting Sofia’s family, a friend named Alda Simoes is campaigning for legislative changes to ensure the safe usage of e-bikes and e-scooters. An online petition initiated by Simoes, which also has the LFB’s support, aims to establish stronger regulations in the use of these vehicles.
Additionally, Electrical Safety First has proposed a bill to ban the sale of electric micromobility vehicles and batteries that do not meet strict safety standards. Companies like Brompton Bicycles are showing support for such safety campaigns, underscoring the importance of using high-quality components.
It is crucial for individuals to follow safety guidelines and avoid leaving e-bikes or e-scooters in exit routes, especially during charging. Proper usage and regular checks of batteries and chargers are essential to prevent potential fire hazards.
