Government Advised to Avoid Excluding Men in Anti-Violence Campaign
Independent MP Dai Le has cautioned that any campaign addressing gendered violence must acknowledge that not all men are violent in order to avoid alienating many individuals.
In her remarks, MP Dai Le emphasized the importance of language in government initiatives to reduce male-on-female violence, highlighting that painting all men as violent could be counterproductive.
She stressed the need to involve young men in the conversation and ensure they are educated to respect and collaborate with women, rather than feeling labeled as perpetrators of violence.
MP Dai Le attributed the rise in violence to the influence of social media and called for vigilance in protecting young people from exposure to violent content online.
She also supported targeted funding for communities experiencing high rates of domestic violence and emphasized the importance of education in promoting mutual respect among individuals.
Communities Escaped Terror
Additionally, MP Dai Le warned against hastily labeling violent acts as terrorism, citing concerns about potential damage to multicultural harmony and cohesion.
She highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement in connecting with young people from diverse backgrounds, such as Vietnamese and Iraqi communities, who may feel disconnected and alienated in society.
MP Dai Le urged for careful consideration in labeling criminal acts as terrorism, particularly to reassure communities that have fled tyrannical regimes and seek safety and security in their new surroundings.
She also called for diverse perspectives and expertise from individuals with different faiths, cultural backgrounds, and lived experiences to inform strategies and decisions in addressing such issues.
