Nationals Contest Speed of Live Sheep Export Ban Inquiry
A rushed parliamentary inquiry into the phase-out of live sheep exports is being criticized as a stunt that shows contempt for farmers. The inquiry, announced on June 4, aims to investigate the federal government’s decision to end live sheep exports by May 2028. This decision has sparked opposition from farmers, industry stakeholders, and the coalition.
The inquiry, due to report back by June 21, has faced criticism for its short timeframe. Nationals Leader David Littleproud argued that “Labor’s committee cannot possibly investigate the consequences into the phasing out of the live sheep export trade in such a short timeframe.” He also condemned the timing of the inquiry and the rejection of a previous motion for a more thorough investigation.
The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Agriculture will explore the provisions of the bill and its impact on the live sheep export trade, particularly in Western Australia. The inquiry aims to address animal welfare concerns and provide a transition package for affected farmers.
Despite government assurances of support, farmers, exporters, and industry stakeholders remain concerned about the timeline and consequences of the phase-out. Critics see the inquiry as a rushed attempt to push through a policy that could harm farmers and regional communities.
