Nissan Electric Vehicle App to Discontinue Due to 2G Network Phaseout


Nissan Leaf owners will no longer have access to features such as remote temperature control and charge range status on their EV, as the manufacturer has announced that the app linked to Nissan Leaf electric vehicles providing this vital information will cease to function in April.

The NissanConnect app, used by owners of Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 vehicles, relies on 2G control units that were installed in vehicles up until 2016.

Over the next few years, UK mobile network providers will phase out their 3G and eventually 2G networks. Ofcom has confirmed that by 2033 at the latest, 2G and 3G networks will no longer be available as the industry transitions to faster 4G and 5G networks.

As a result of this technology shift, Nissan has announced the discontinuation of its EV app linked to Nissan Leaf, impacting several features available to Nissan Leaf owners.

Features such as remote temperature control, charge range status of the EV, and tracking of driving history will be among the withdrawn app features.

Nissan has begun notifying car owners about the app shutdown via letters and emails, ensuring they are aware of the changes.

The NissanConnect app will still be accessible for Nissan Leaf models produced between November 2015 and May 2019, as well as Nissan e-NV200 models produced from March 2016.

The Nissan Leaf, which has sold over 650,000 units worldwide since its launch in December 2010, continues to be a popular choice for environmentally conscious drivers. In the UK, Nissan produces the Leaf vehicles at its Sunderland plant.

With the impending zero emission zones and the 2030 combustion engine ban, drivers are under pressure to switch from traditional cars to electric vehicles. This transition is expected to intensify competition in the electric car market this year, leading to more competitive prices for buyers.

However, consumers should be aware of potential challenges, such as increased insurance costs for EVs and the need to consider the long-term support and technology maintenance of their vehicles in light of the Nissan app switch-off.
