Paris Increases Security Measures in Preparation for France Versus Israel Soccer Match
In an effort to prevent similar incidents like those in Amsterdam last week, police in the French capital are doubling the number of officers deployed. This increased security is in preparation for the upcoming football match between France and Israel following the violence Israeli fans faced in Amsterdam.
For this “high-risk” match, 2,500 officers will be stationed at the Stade de France in Paris, with an additional 1,500 officers spread throughout the city. This deployment is double the usual amount for such events and will be supplemented by 1,600 private security guards at the stadium.
Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez emphasized the importance of heightened security measures, stating that there will be a strong security presence with anti-terrorism measures in place. Security checks will be intensified, including pat-downs, bag searches, and other security protocols.
French authorities have been coordinating with Israeli security forces to ensure safety during the match. French President Emmanuel Macron will attend the event to show solidarity against recent anti-Semitic acts.
Despite the increased security, only a small crowd is expected at the match, with limited tickets sold for the large stadium. Some French supporters have expressed concerns, with a percentage citing security risks and practical reasons for their hesitation to attend.
While acknowledging the concerns, French defender Dayot Upamecano emphasized the team’s focus on the game ahead. The decision to not hold the match behind closed doors was approved by top government officials.
Recent events have prompted Israel to caution its citizens against attending overseas events involving Israeli teams due to safety concerns. Amsterdam, in particular, saw tensions rise with clashes and attacks on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans.
The incidents in Amsterdam were condemned as anti-Semitic by various governments, leading to increased vigilance for upcoming events involving Israeli teams. Security measures will be ramped up to ensure the safety of all attendees.
