Peel Regional Police have announced that nine people are facing 19 charges in relation to the $20-million Toronto Pearson airport gold heist that took place last year.
The arrests were revealed on April 17, marking the one-year anniversary of the bold theft. Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah described the incident as so remarkable that it could be the plot of a “Netflix series.”
Additionally, Canada-wide warrants have been issued for the apprehension of three more suspects as part of the joint investigation called “Project 24K” with the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau. Chief Duraiappah stated that the investigation also thwarted a plan to import a large quantity of firearms into the country.
The heist took place on April 17 of last year when the perpetrators stole 6,600 gold bars valued at $20 million CAD and about $2.5 million in various foreign currencies from an Air Canada storage facility at Toronto Pearson airport.
