Protesters acquitted of plotting to murder RCMP officers during Coutts blockade

A jury made their decision late Friday, ruling both Anthony Olienick and Chris Carbert not guilty of conspiring to kill RCMP officers at the border blockade in Coutts, Alta.

However, Olienick and Carbert were found guilty of other charges, including mischief and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Olienick also faced a conviction for possessing a pipe bomb.

Following the discovery of weapons, ammunition, and body armour near the blockade at the Canada-U.S. border crossing in 2022, the two were arrested. The blockade was part of a series of protests across the country against COVID-19 regulations and vaccine mandates.

In court, statements and text messages were presented from the accused, describing the protest as a final stand against what they perceived as a tyrannical federal government.

Upon the announcement of the acquittal on the most serious charge of conspiracy to commit murder, there was a shocked reaction in the courtroom in Lethbridge, Alta. The case was adjourned to address the convictions on the lesser charges on Aug. 12.

Outside the courthouse, supporters celebrated with cries of “Freedom!” and embraces.

Two other individuals involved in the Coutts protest case had previously pleaded guilty to reduced charges, receiving sentences reflecting time served.
