Quebec Maple Syrup Producers Concerned About Potential ‘Significant Impact’ of Trump Tariffs

Quebec’s maple syrup producers are concerned that their industry will suffer a significant blow if U.S. President Donald Trump proceeds with his threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian exports next month.

Joël Vaudeville, the spokesperson for Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, stated that the group’s 13,500 members anticipate a decrease in sales if the tariffs result in higher prices for their products in the United States.

Vaudeville doubts whether American consumers, who purchased $368 million worth of Quebec syrup in 2023, will be willing to pay more. He also highlighted that a decline in sales could have severe repercussions for Quebec’s industry.

He mentioned that exports to the United States accounted for 55 percent of Quebec’s total production last year.

According to Vaudeville, Quebec produces nearly three-quarters of the world’s maple syrup production, with regions to the east of Montreal expected to be most impacted if tariffs are enforced.

He mentioned in an interview today that it is too early to determine how the industry will respond, but producers might explore other markets such as Europe and Asia or request the provincial government to purchase maple syrup to store as a reserve until the “Trump storm passes.”
