Reaction of India’s Foreign Minister to Murder Charges; Alleges Canada’s Leniency towards Criminals
India’s Foreign Affairs Minister expresses concerns about Canada being a significant issue regarding Sikh separatism.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar also criticized Canada for welcoming individuals involved in criminal activities when discussing recent developments in a homicide case that has strained relations between the two countries.
The RCMP charged three Indian nationals on May 3 in connection with the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was fatally shot last June outside a temple in Surrey, B.C.
His death led to protests and demonstrations against Indian officials in Canada, particularly after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of playing a role in the murder.
Mr. Jaishankar believes the protests in Canada have crossed the line of free speech and reiterated claims that Ottawa permits Indian criminals to immigrate to the country.
He also accused Canadian politicians of supporting individuals seeking to establish a separate Sikh homeland known as Khalistan.

Mr. Jaishankar made these remarks during an event in Bhubaneswar where he responded to questions about countries like the U.S. and Canada supporting separatist movements deemed unconstitutional by India.
He highlighted Canada as a major concern and criticized political parties for legitimizing extremism and separatism in the name of free speech.
Mr. Jaishankar also brought up the issue of attacks on Indian diplomatic missions and staff in Canada and emphasized the need for a strong stance in response to such incidents.
Furthermore, he reiterated the claim that Canada shelters criminals associated with Sikh separatists from India.
New Delhi has expressed similar concerns in the past regarding the nexus between Khalistan separatism, organized crime, and human trafficking.
However, Canada has maintained that India has not provided sufficient evidence to prove the allegations of terrorism against the accused individuals.
In his statements, Mr. Jaishankar warned of potential pushback against calls for Khalistan separation, indicating that there will be reactions to such movements.
The Indian high commission in Ottawa did not immediately respond to inquiries about Mr. Jaishankar’s remarks, and Ms. Joly’s office also remained silent on the matter.
