As Canadian students return to classrooms, it is crucial to prioritize teaching and learning in the new school year.
The latest results from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) reveal a concerning decline in math proficiency among 15-year-old students in Canada. Over the last two decades, math scores dropped by 35 points, equivalent to almost two grade levels. Reading skills also suffered, with a 27-point decline over the same period.
Improving students’ foundational skills is key to addressing these challenges. In math, this means focusing on memorization of times tables and mastering standard algorithms for basic operations. Similarly, in reading, emphasizing phonics over whole language instruction can significantly enhance students’ literacy skills.
Providing teachers with content-rich curriculum guides and promoting subjects like science and social studies can further expand students’ knowledge base, enhancing their reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities.
Combatting woke ideology in schools is essential to fostering a conducive learning environment. Instead of divisive narratives centered around race, gender, and sexuality, schools should prioritize open dialogue and exposure to diverse perspectives.
Emphasizing academic education over indoctrination is critical for the success of all students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. By focusing on core academic skills, schools can equip students with the tools they need to excel in higher education and beyond.
Education, not indoctrination, should be the primary focus of every school.
