Senators Woo and Oh Back Alleged Chinese Police Stations’ Lawsuit Against RCMP
Sen. Yuen Pau Woo and Sen. Victor Oh are throwing their support behind two Montreal-based organizations that are filing a $2.5 million lawsuit against the RCMP over allegations that they are operating as secret Chinese police stations. Mr. Woo and Mr. Oh expressed their solidarity with the Chinese community in Quebec and the affected organizations, SFCGM and CSQRS, during a press conference held on December 1. The organizations, managed by Xixi Li, also claimed that the RCMP’s investigation has negatively impacted their funding and financial standing. In response to the accusations, the RCMP stated that the investigation is still ongoing and there have been no arrests. The investigation followed media reports about China’s operation of secret police stations in Canada. During the press conference, news moderator May Chiu commented that there was a lack of evidence against the organizations and the definition of a Chinese police station was unclear. Ms. Li denied any activities that could be viewed as foreign interference and refuted claims of her involvement in any security risks. The organizations have been promoting a Chinese application, Qiaobao, to the local Chinese community, which has raised concerns due to its connection to Chinese state-affiliated entities. The government has also cut funding for both organizations and the organizations face additional financial challenges from a bank’s decision not to renew their mortgage. Senator Woo, who has helped draft a citizen petition against the creation of a foreign agent registry in Canada, has been an advocate for the Chinese community.
