State Department allows Ukraine’s Azov Brigade to receive US weapons and training
A new analysis by the State Department has found no evidence of gross human rights violations being carried out by Ukraine’s Azov Brigade, clearing the unit to receive weapons and training from the United States.
The U.S. State Department confirmed to The Epoch Times on June 11 that the Azov Brigade, a part of Ukraine’s National Guard, has passed Leahy vetting and is now eligible for U.S.-funded assistance. This vetting process ensures compliance with the Leahy Law, which prohibits assistance to foreign security units involved in gross violations of human rights.
The Azov Brigade celebrated its successful vetting on social media and stated that eligibility for U.S. assistance will enhance their combat effectiveness and protect the lives of their personnel.
The brigade, originally formed as the Azov Battalion, fought alongside Ukrainian government forces against Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. It was later incorporated into the Ukrainian National Guard and redesignated as the Azov Regiment.
In response to the Azov Brigade passing Leahy vetting, Russian officials have reiterated accusations of neo-Nazism. However, the State Department spokesperson emphasized that the brigade is different from the original militia and has been subject to thorough review.
