Trudeau prioritizes Canadian safety over commenting on TikTok’s future in the US
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau states that he will not discuss the future of TikTok in the United States, but his government will prioritize the security of Canadians.
The U.S. Senate has approved a bill that would require TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance based in Beijing, to sell the social-media app within a year or face a ban in America.
This potential ban was included in a large aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
Trudeau emphasizes that for TikTok, the security, privacy, and data protection of Canadians must come first.
The Canadian government conducted a national security review of TikTok in September last year and banned the app from federal government devices.
Concerns have been raised by Western governments about the possibility of sensitive data falling into the hands of the Chinese government through the popular platform or it being used for spreading misinformation.
According to Chinese law, companies can be directed by the government in Beijing to assist in intelligence gathering.
