Victoria’s Transgender Community Decides to Opt Out of Pride March
The ongoing scrutiny over Australian law enforcement and historical discrimination against LGBT individuals continues with the decision by Transgender Victoria to withdraw from the 2025 Midsumma Pride March. The organization cited “discontent” with Victorian Police and ongoing distrust of law enforcement. Victorian Police have stated that they conduct regular training on inclusivity and diversity within the community.
The Midsumma pride march in Victoria is expected to involve more than 7,000 people and could draw crowds of over 50,000 individuals.
Transgender Victoria (TGV) CEO Son Vivienne explained that the decision to withdraw from the march was made after careful consideration of recent community feedback indicating discontent among transgender individuals regarding their interactions with and treatment by Victoria Police.
“In light of these concerns, Transgender Victoria’s Committee has approved a one-year suspension of participation in the Midsumma Pride March. Our future participation is contingent on Victoria Police accepting accountability for measurable change,” Vivienne said.
TGV urged Victoria Police to commit to systemic reform to address these issues.
The move by TGV follows controversy in Sydney over the participation of New South Wales Police in the Mardi Gras parade, stemming from historical allegations of bullying and discrimination against LGBT individuals by law enforcement.
Meanwhile, Victorian Police Commissioner Shane Patton defended the actions of his police force, emphasizing ongoing training on human rights, respect, inclusivity, and diversity. They support employees who are part of the LGBT communities and are still in discussions about marching in uniform at the event scheduled for early February.
“If they determine that they don’t want us to march in uniform, because, for whatever reason, the risk is too great or there’s a feeling among some members of the community that they don’t want us there, well, we’ll abide by that,” Patton added.
