Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Duncan to endorse Biden over Trump

Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, who served from 2019-2023 under Gov. Brian Kemp, has announced his support for President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. Duncan expressed his confusion over why many in the GOP continue to stand behind Donald Trump.

“The GOP needs to move on from the Trump era in order to rebuild, leaving conservative Republicans like myself with no choice but to support Biden,” Duncan wrote in an op-ed for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “However, we should still work on electing GOP congressional majorities to provide a check and balance on Biden’s second-term legislative agenda.”

Duncan, who chose not to seek re-election alongside Kemp in 2022, believes that Trump’s conduct and character have disqualified him, and he blames Trump for promoting unfounded conspiracy theories that led to the events of Jan. 6, 2021.

“I find it disappointing to see an increasing number of Republicans aligning themselves with Trump,” Duncan wrote. “This includes some of his strongest critics, such as U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, and former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, who recently pledged their support for the Republican ticket.”

“This mindset is misguided.”

Duncan noted that some hesitant Trump supporters may point to policy differences with Biden, Trump’s accomplishments in his first term, or the turmoil on college campuses as reasons for their support. However, Duncan testified against Trump in front of the Fulton County grand jury, claiming that the last year of Trump’s presidency was marked by racial unrest and inflammatory statements.

“The healing of the Republican Party cannot occur with Trump as president, especially considering the potential harm that awaits our country,” Duncan stated. “A forthcoming Time magazine article highlights the dangers of an imperial presidency under Trump.”

“Unlike Trump, I have been a lifelong member of the GOP. This November, I will be voting for a decent person I may not agree with on policy, over a morally bankrupt criminal defendant,” Duncan concluded.
