Sen. Marshall urges Newsmax to honor the sacrifice of the military and Gold Star Families

Sen. Roger Marshall, in an interview with Newsmax at the First Division “Big Red One” Monument near the White House on Sunday, emphasized the significance of Memorial Day as a time to honor the military members who made the ultimate sacrifice defending the United States.

Discussing the addition of 631 names of soldiers from the Big Red One who sacrificed their lives for the nation in the past decade, the Kansas Republican told Newsmax’s “Sunday Report.”

Reflecting on the dedication of the monument by President Calvin Coolidge 100 years ago, Marshall mentioned the addition of 5,000 names to the honor roll and the 13,000 Big Red One soldiers who have given their lives for the country.

A ceremony conducted at the monument unveiled the names of the 631 1st Infantry Division Soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with a new Desert Storm plaque to mark the 100th anniversary of the monument.

Marshall welcomed the Gold Star families from Kansas who lost SPC Joseph Lister, SSGT Zac Hargrove, PFC William Johnson, and Sgt. Kevin Gilbertson.

Marshall’s efforts in Congress include advocating for the FIRST Act, which requires an act of Congress to add names of fallen Big Red One soldiers to the First Infantry Division Monument.

Recognizing the affiliation of the 1st Division with Fort Raleigh in Kansas, Marshall spent time with Gold Star families, providing them with tours and breakfast.

Marshall, whose family has a history of military service, emphasized the importance of Memorial Day in honoring those who made sacrifices and the significance of recognizing the families of fallen soldiers.

Highlighting the service of his father, brother, and son in the military, Marshall expressed the deep personal significance of Memorial Day to him.
