Senators Find No Evidence of US Weapons Being Sold on the Black Market in Ukraine

Three U.S. senators said in interviews set to air this weekend that there is no evidence U.S. weapons that were sent to Ukraine ended up on the black market, Axios reports.

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., all spoke to CBS News foreign correspondent Holly Williams from Kyiv for “60 Minutes,” in interviews that will air on Sunday.

“The senators — and other U.S. officials — told us there have been no substantiated cases of American weapons being diverted,” Williams says in the upcoming report, according to an excerpt received by Axios.

“We’re following every piece of equipment,” Blumenthal says in his interview. “There has been no diversion — no evidence of misappropriation.”

He adds, “This is an American success story on aiding a partner fighting for freedom.”

Oleksandra Ustinova, a Ukrainian anti-corruption activist and legislator who is in charge of overseeing foreign arms sent to the country, told The New York Times last month that she has seen “zero evidence” of foreign arms being sold on the black market, adding, “Once there is smuggling or misuse of weapons, we’re done.”
