Turner: Israeli Intelligence Failed in Preventing Hamas Attack

The House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner, in an interview with CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday, stated that the recent Hamas terrorist attack on Oct. 7 revealed a flaw in Israel’s intelligence gathering.

Turner, a Republican congressman from Ohio, expressed concerns about the unexpected gap in intelligence gathering that led to the failure to anticipate the Hamas attack and the hostage situation that followed. He mentioned that the United States is collaborating with Israel in locating Hamas and gaining a better understanding of their structure and capabilities.

He also noted that there were doubts and concerns about Israel’s response to the attack and their ability to dismantle Hamas. However, he acknowledged that the Israeli army has been making progress at a faster rate than expected.

When asked about the potential success of eliminating Hamas, Turner emphasized the importance of targeting the organization’s function, structure, finances, weapons systems, and command and control. He highlighted the potential for the Israel Defense Forces to diminish Hamas’ ability to conduct attacks and give the Palestinians in Gaza an opportunity to transition to a different form of government.

Turner also expressed concerns for the Palestinians in Gaza, stating that they are both prisoners and victims of Hamas, just as Israel is affected by the organization’s actions.
