After months of signaling a crackdown, Hochul included language in the final budget bill to establish a statewide task force to close unlicensed stores and allow immediate closure of businesses selling illegal marijuana that pose a threat to local health and safety.
The New York City Sheriff can deputize NYPD officers to help enforce weed laws and impose fines on landlords who turn a blind eye to their renters’ illegal activities.
Thousands of unlicensed shops have popped up in New York City neighborhoods since weed was legalized in 2021, putting consumers at risk by selling unregulated products.
