Indiana Woman Rescued After Spending Six Days Trapped in Car, Survives by Drinking Ditch Water | US News
A woman who was stuck in her vehicle for nearly a week following an accident managed to survive by soaking her hoodie in water from a nearby ditch so she could drink.
Brieonna Cassell, 41, hailing from Wheatfield, Indiana, was reported missing by her family on March 5th.
On Tuesday, after enduring six days trapped inside, she was rescued when a man operating drainage equipment spotted her car abandoned off the roadway close to the town of Brook.
Johnny Martinez alerted his supervisor, Morocco fire chief Jeremy Vanderwall, and together they examined the vehicle.
Upon discovering Ms. Cassell conscious inside the car, emergency services were summoned and she was flown to a hospital in Chicago by helicopter.
Sheriff Shannon Cothran of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office expressed on social media: “In my opinion, Mr. Martinez is a hero, and we can never express our gratitude enough for his sharp observation and prompt action.”
Her father, Delmar Caldwell, informed ABC News that Ms. Cassell had dozed off while driving and ended up in a ditch.
He mentioned that she was left in the car with severe injuries to her legs and wrist, and her phone had died beneath the passenger seat.
“The only way she managed to survive was by using her hoodie to soak up water from the ditch and suck on it,” he explained.

In a recent update from Ms. Cassell’s mother, shared by the sheriff’s office on Wednesday, it was reported that the 41-year-old is in stable condition, although doctors are worried about the healing process of her legs.
The office stated: “Her prognosis for recovery is positive, but the journey ahead will be long.”
