Argentinian Economist Milei Presents Economic Proposal to IMF and White House in Washington
Argentina’s newly elected libertarian president expressed positivity about his meeting with the White House in a statement released by his office following the meeting. Javier Milei, the President-elect, also held meetings with officials from President Joe Biden’s administration and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss the country’s inflation and debt problems. Milei’s perspective focused on the international geopolitical agenda and his commitment to freedom and western values. Milei’s office also arranged further discussions with Treasury officials and IMF leaders regarding the economic reforms he plans to implement.
Milei’s U.S. visit included meetings with former President Bill Clinton and former Democratic senator Chris Dodd. He remained committed to aligning with the United States and Israel geopolitically, and he rejected collaboration with communist regimes.
Milei also had a virtual meeting with IMF Head Kristalina Georgieva, during which the IMF expressed their support for Argentina. Georgieva promised the IMF’s support in improving public finances and decreasing inflation. Argentina’s inflation rate is over 140 percent, and the peso has lost 200% of its value against the U.S. dollar.
The U.S. administration is concerned about Argentina’s ties to China, as Beijing has been strengthening its relationship with Buenos Aires. Milei has vowed to focus on diplomatic relations with the U.S. and Israel and expects to move the Argentine embassy to Jerusalem. Former President Donald Trump was expected to attend his inauguration, but this is now unlikely.
