Bob Graham, Former Senator and Florida Governor, Passes Away at 87

Former U.S. Sen. and two-term Florida Gov. Bob Graham, who gained national prominence as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks and as an early critic of the Iraq war, has passed away at the age of 87.

Graham’s family confirmed his death in a statement released by his daughter Gwen Graham.

“We are deeply saddened to report the passing of a visionary leader, dedicated public servant, and even more importantly, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather,” the family said.

Graham, who served three terms in the Senate, made a bid for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination, highlighting his opposition to the Iraq invasion.

But his campaign was cut short by heart surgery in January 2003, and he was unable to gain sufficient support from voters, eventually withdrawing in October of that year. He did not seek reelection in 2004 and was succeeded by Republican Mel Martinez.

Graham was known for his unique political tactics, such as his “workdays” where he undertook various jobs and meticulously documented his daily activities.

Throughout his political career, Graham was an outspoken critic of the Iraq war and President George W. Bush’s handling of the situation.

During his time in Washington, Graham worked across party lines and was widely popular among Florida voters.

Graham’s legacy includes his efforts to improve education, healthcare, and environmental protection in Florida.

After retiring from public office, Graham devoted his time to public policy and advocating for increased civics education in schools.

In 2010, Graham was selected to serve on an independent commission to investigate the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
